About the artist
Folkert Sierts – Winsum (Groningen) The Netherlands, 1948 – lives and works in Groningen. Studied in Groningen at the academy of arts “Minerva” and the state university. Since 1979 his profession has been a visual artist. He writes since 2002 poems and short histories in the Groninger language (Grunnegers) and from 2009, he writes poems and stories in the German language.
His working-area is and has been for many years, the abstract photography. He collects visual/image-materials, which have been analog and digital manipulated. It is playing with the possibilities of the technique and the picture elements. There come visual representations into existence, which do not refer to the everyday reality. His photographs do not need to be sharp. Vague forms can be used to interpret the different ways of seeing. Everybody finds something unique in his work, thus no photographs, which you would find and admire in the daily newspapers and magazines. Colour has always been important for Folkert Sierts. But during these recent times, his black and white studies are more frequently found in his work.
In his poems, he tries to create in the same way as his art and his photography. And this is his playful, creative art. His poems are in comparison with his photographic works closer to the everyday reality. His themes are: love, death, nature, language, signs … Images come from what he sees in life, his dreams, the bible, the art, the art-history! And there may appear sometimes something spontaneous out of his heart.
